How to Properly Sanitize Your
Reusable Bottles
Clean Bottles, Happy Planet!
We’re all about reusing containers—it’s our whole thing! Not only does it keep bottles out of landfills, but it also saves the energy needed to produce new ones and recycle old ones. If you’re rocking the low-waste lifestyle, chances are you’ve got a stash of bottles ready to be refilled. Let’s make sure they’re safe and squeaky clean!
Why Cleanliness is a Big Deal:
Many companies shy away from refills because of contamination worries. Our products are plant-based, with natural preservatives that keep away mold and funky stuff—but only when your containers are clean and dry. This is extra important for skincare products like lotions and oils.
To keep your refilled goodies fresh, we recommend a yearly “bottle reset,” which is just a fancy way of saying sanitize once a year before refilling.
Best Bottles for Refilling:
While any container can be refilled, glass and #5 plastics (polypropylene) are the superstars. Glass is non-porous, easy to sanitize, and doesn’t hold onto icky bacteria. #5 Plastics are sturdy and can handle high-temperature cleaning, making them great for soaps and cleaning products.
Step-by-Step: Sanitizing & Prepping Your Containers
- Scrub-a-Dub-Dub!
Remove all leftover product with hot, soapy water. Run it through the dishwasher if possible—clean bottles make happy refills! - Glass Gets the Spa Treatment:
Pop your glass bottles into boiling water for 5 minutes. This deep clean is perfect for leave-on skincare and face products. - Plastics Need a Little Extra Love:
Give them a final rinse with 120-proof (60%) alcohol like Everclear, or use our Hand Sanitizer for a quick, effective finish. This helps evaporate any sneaky leftover water. - Dry Like a Pro:
Make sure every nook and cranny is bone dry before bringing your bottles in for a refill. Moisture is a no-go!
Cleaning Tops and Pumps
Clear the Gunk:
Flush all residue from pumps and lids with hot, soapy water. For pumps, keep pumping until nothing but clean water comes out.
Sanitize:
Pump 60% alcohol (Everclear or our sanitizer) through the tubes 10 times to remove every drop of old product.
